CoumadinIf you are taking a blood thinner (anticoagulant), we know that you have questions about your diet, possible side effects and how your blood thinner will interact with other drugs. At our UAMS Family Medical Centers, we offer personalized treatment to help you take charge of your health.

Coumadin® is the brand name of the drug warfarin, which is an anticoagulant, more commonly known as a blood thinner. Blood thinners act to prevent your blood from clotting as fast as it normally would or helps if you already have blood clots.

This medicine requires close monitoring to ensure that you are taking the right amount for your individual condition. Our staff members will check your INR (international normalized ratio), which helps to examine the impact of the medication.

We will also work with you to determine whether you are taking other medications that may interact with Coumadin or whether your diet has changed, which could affect how the medication works.

Our caring and compassionate staff also helps to minimize your risk for side effects such as:

  • Skin changes or discoloration
  • Easy bruising or bleeding that will not stop
  • Pain in stomach, back or sides
  • Nosebleeds
  • Feeling weak or light-headed
  • Problems with vision, speech or balance
